CHEVROLET BUILDS FIRST IMPALA SS IN 25 YEARS
(Reuters 2/23/94)
General Motors Corp. said Wednesday it began production for
the first time in 25 years of its Chevrolet Impala SS sedan.
The car, a limited edition version of the Caprice, will sell
for $ 22,495.
GM's Chevrolet Motor Division said it will be the first Impala
SS to be produced since 1969 and the first four-door Impala ever
built.
The car will come in one color, black.
The new 1994 Impala will be equipped with luxury features, a
260-horsepower V8 engine, high-performance suspension and leather
seats.
GM will build only 5,000 Impala SS cars for the 1994 model
year. Production began at GM's assembly plant here.
The first Impala SS coupe was built in 1961, and the auto
maker sold nearly 1 million cars in the 1960s.
The only major options for the new Impala are a compact disc
player, a rear window defogger and an engine block heater.
Dealers have already ordered all of the limited production
cars, and if consumer demand is strong, Chevy said it will
consider building more of them next year.
