GM: Chevrolet Impala SS Returning to Assembly Lines in 1994 (AP 4/3/93)

The Chevrolet Impala SS, a hit at car shows 20 years after it

traveled into automotive history, is about to make a comeback.

A limited number of new Impala SS six-passenger sports sedans

will be produced beginning next year, General Motors President

Jack Smith announced Friday.

GM decided to revive the model after receiving positive

feedback from an Impala SS concept car display at auto shows,

Smith said in a statement. The design for the Impala was based on

a civilian model of Chevrolet's Caprice police car.

The Impala SS appeared from 1961 to 1971 as one of GM's

high-performance full-size cars.

The price and the number of new Impalas being produced weren't

immediately released.
